2005-2006 Year-In-Review PDF

  • Major Project. Club members voted to embark upon a major project campaign to build a community water spray park. Committees began meeting to discuss the funding, design and partnerships with the City of Pierre. The Club also voted to be responsible for at least 25% of the total cost which is estimated to be approximately $250,000. Initial designs were received from three suppliers and three major funders agreed to contribute. The project took a hiatus during the summer because the City of Pierre and the City of Ft. Pierre have not yet decided what to do about their aging outdoor pools and those decisions will greatly influence where and when a Rotary Spray Park can be built.

  • The Community Development Committee, co-chaired by Ellen Lee and Tim Bjork, awarded grants to the following organizations: Pierre Area Chamber; Oahe First Book; Capitol City Questers; Countryside Hospice; Oahe Inc. and Missouri Shores Domestic Violence Center.

  • President Beverly Lewis received a Paul Harris Fellowship from District Governor Dick Nolte during his July visit.

PRESIDENT: CHUCK QUINN

CLUB: PIERRE / Fort PIERRE

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Committee Structure strengthened and expanded

  • Bingo Re-Organized - Collection of 2 quarters to play Bingo with winner receiving ½ of pot raised was changed. New system was to collect $1 per member per week with the winner of Bingo drawing from a deck of cards for the queen of spades. Each week the queen was NOT drawn there was no pay out. Half of the funds raised went to the club, and half stayed in the pot each week until the queen of spades was drawn. Each week, whatever card was drawn other that the queen of spades was removed from the deck. This Attendance Committee technique saw an increase in weekly attendance and a 120% increase in funds to the club.

  • Greeter position was established on a regular basis by having the person who presented the program one week become the greeter the next week.

  • Members helped with the set-up of the2006 Pierre-Fort Pierre Chautauqua production in August 2006 at Steamboat Park.

  • PR Committee established a Webpage for the Club. Work progresses on the Club Projects hotlink, but the entire site still needs to be completed.

  • A display case was built in May 2007 in the lobby of the Ramkota by Jim Mollison to present educational materials about Rotary.

  • Eleven new members joined Rotary this year, with four leaving. This was a net gain of seven and the membership rose from 78 to 85 current members.

  • Five Paul Harris’ inductees were admitted to the society this year – Rick Jorgensen, John Simpson, Kelley Van Lith, Marshall Miller and Tom Tveit. The Van Lith Paul Harris was a gift from Jim Mollison and the Miller Paul Harris was a gift from Ed Jacobson.

Club History (Hofer) – The committee provided historical tidbits for some of the weekly newsletters. Hofer hounded Maher to no end to be sure she got her year-end report done.

Winged Walleye Wingding (Durick) – This event was discontinued this year. It was determined that the expense was more than the overall benefits derived. The board and committee had informal conversations about moving to exchanges with other clubs in the district versus clubs from others states. No action has been taken to date.

Vocational/Youth Services (Van Lith, Director)

Scholarship Committee (Mehlhaff) – Scholarships totaling $8100 were awarded to the following students:

Paul Freeberg Rotary Scholarship of $2,500 to Robert Hopper (Riggs).

Paul Freeberg Rotary Scholarship of $2500 to Shawn Flottmeyer (SC).

Freeberg/Wilcox Rotary Scholarship of $500 to Jessica Pearson (SC).
Note: Tyler Wilcox was awarded the $2500 scholarship in 2005. He then passed away from cancer. Leadership Central South Dakota Scholarship awarded annually to a club member. $250 to Chuck Quinn funded ½ of the registration fee.

Discussions were held at the board and committee level in regards to changing the scholarship application forms in hopes of soliciting information that will allow the students to demonstrate their uniqueness among all applicants. Such a change may be designed around the 4-Way Test.

Youth Committee (Northrup) – After extension research into the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, this committee recommended participation by our club. The board approved and budgeted $2500 for the program. The Pierre School Board approved participation at their level. The first YSE student will come to Pierre in the Fall of 2006.

Community Service (Barden, director)

Human Development/ “One of a Kind” (Bunkowske) – Kindergarten and new students from the Pierre and Fort Pierre Districts participated in the One of a Kind program. This one handled in one day at Buchanan School with River City Transit providing transportation.

Community Development Committee (Lee) – At the recommendation of this committee, Pierre-Fort Pierre Rotary made contributions to the following organizations during 2005-06:
SD Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pierre-Fort Pierre Jr. Achievement, CHAP, Oahe Red Cross (local plus Katrina flood relief, included individual contributions), Oahe Inc. (Included individual contributions and matched by Rotary District 5610 Simplified Grant of $2000).

The committee organized Rotary’s annual hosting of The Banquet in May of 2006.

Committee recommends developing a club website and has members willing to assist in this effort.

Foundation (Evenstad) – The board requested a vote of the club to determine the membership’s wishes regarding the foundation. The club was voted strongly to continue to grow the foundation to a principal of $100,000, and to limit spending to interest earned only.

In order to show the activity within the foundation, the board has directed the Oahe Foundation to send quarterly interest checks to the Club treasurer. The treasurer will be responsible for cutting all checks including those for scholarships. Any remaining foundation funds at the end of each year will be deposited into the foundation as principal.

Fundraising

Booth Projects (Weber) – The booth project raised _________ during 2005-06. This is slightly over budget expectations. The board has recommended additional marketing of the project to potential Ramkota convention planners and to other meeting sites such as King’s Inn and any potential new site in Fort Pierre.

Keyboard Project (Lygstad) – This project raised _________ during 2005-06. This is over budget expectations.

International Service (Rohlf, director)

International Project (Quinn) – After a presentation to the entire club on the St. Jude School in Tanzania, Africa received positive response, the committee recommended that the board approve a $350 sponsorship for the school. The club additionally recommended that the Club seek to multiply this contribution through the Rotary International grant system. The board strongly agreed with this. As this grant requires partnership with a Rotary Club outside the country, the board voted to carry-over the $350 to the 2006-07 budget to allow time to establish the necessary partnerships.

The committee considered a second-hand clothing contribution program, however, decided against this project.

Group Study Exchange (Schroyer) – The committee worked to recruit a participant in the District’s exchange to India. The club’s potential applicant found conflicts, and, in the end, decided not to apply.

The committee coordinated the hosting of a Rotary Friendship Exchange group from France.

Year-end Awards

2005-06 Rotarian of the Year Award was presented to Jim Mollision. Jim is an example of a complete Rotarian. He is extremely active in local club projects. In 2006 he initiated and led the club’s volunteer efforts for the Cabela’s Fishing Tournament. Jim often provides significant financial contributions to local Rotary projects. Jim takes his role as a district assistant governor seriously, visiting central SD clubs and seeking to build relationships among clubs by taking other Pierre members on these visits. Jim attended the Rotary International Convention in Chicago. He and his wife are Paul Harris Fellows.

2005-06 Spirit of Community Award was presented to Ellen Lee for her leadership of the Community Development Committee, for organizing Rotary’s participation in The Banquet, and for the significant leadership community development activities through her vocation and personal life such as the Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth, suicide prevention, and Healthy Community initiative.
